OM
OM is a mystic sound that refers to Isvara or God’s name. It’s a seed sound from which all other words are formed. I meditate and repeat the mantram OM, feeling the hum resonate deep inside my chest. I like to think of it as a time I talk to my heart, focusing on the energy throughout my body. Meditating helps me live in the present moment.
I also meditate as I create my stained glass. Each of my designs comes from my heart.
Today I worked on this glass mosaic design for a 18” round cement stepping stone for my garden. It’s the OM symbol. Now whenever I step into my garden, it will be a reminder to breathe and focus on living in the present moment.

Sandy,
I like the idea of meditation as talking to your heart. Never thought of it that way. I try to do a little meditation and some affirmations before I start to write. It seems to help me relax and get into my story.
Your new design is lovely.

Way back when I was in 6th grade, I grew interested in George Harrison because his music was so unique. I didn’t understand much of it, but as I researched some of his ‘messages’ I noticed the ‘om’ sign over and over. I used to draw it on all my notebooks, and while I did, I made the sound in my head. To this day, that sound still resonates with me… and every summer, when I hear an air conditioning unit humming somewhere in the back of a room, it reminds me of that sound. There’s a peacefulness and comfort about it that’s truly hard to explain but oh so easy to feel.

My parents taught my sister and I to meditate and chant as children. As I grew older I stopped doing it. Your post touched me and made me realize how much I need to start doing it again. It is wonderfully peaceful to look within, concentrate on your breaths and to be concious of how conected your heart and mind are. Wonderful post!

Lyndi, Affirmations are great for writers. I used to have them posted up by my desk. Now, I’m outside building my stained glass, so I take my meditation with me.
Debbie, I never thought of the the air conditioner as a relaxing sound, but now that you’ve mentioned it, I’ll have to focus on that.
Beth, Good luck with starting up the practice again.

Sandy, your stepping stone is beautiful beyond words– the symbolism in it and the beautiful tones. I am glad to know the meaning behind the chant, OM. I didn’t know it came from Isvara or God’s name. It is the first sound babies make.
